Between Nov. 1 and 11 each year, 3,500 of crosses – taking up five acres – are erected and illuminated along Memorial Drive in this western Canadian city. They honour southern Alberta’s men and women who died serving their country in world wars, the Korean war, peacekeeping and the war in Afghanistan. Each cross has the name, age and death date for a soldier, nurse or merchant marine. Visitors are encouraged to stop in front of each cross that moves them to pay respect to that soldier by quietly calling their name out loud while holding their hand over their heart and expressing whatever sentiment they are feeling. It culminates with Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 11. Nikon D7100, tripod.
