Natural landscapes: on the path to new life

FIREWEED IN THE BURNT FOREST, KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Fireweed is a tall, showy wildflower that grows from sea level to the subalpine zone. A colourful sight in many parts of North America, fireweed thrives in open meadows, along streams, roadsides, and forest edges. In some places, this species is so abundant that it can carpet entire meadows with brilliant pink flowers.
The flower’s name stems from its ability to quickly colonize areas burned by fire. Many parts of this western Canadian mountain park were recently burned and this patch of fireweed was close enough to the road for me to carefully make my way to it and make pictures like this.
