I travelled from my Calgary home to Frank Lake Conservation Area, hoping to capture a decent sunrise. I certainly did, but this wildlife encounter was an unexpected bonus. While walking along a boardwalk to a bird viewing area, I encountered this coot just a few metres away. At first I scrambled to put a telephoto lens on the camera and grab a few exposures before it departed. But as it became clear the coot was not at all disturbed by my presence, I had time to set up my tripod, sit down and make many pictures at the bird’s level. It was a delightful experience, especially with a few grey, fuzzy babies swimming around the area. Nikon D7100, tripod, 70-300-mm. zoom lens
