Urban landscapes: the place of history
THE CUSTOM HOUSE, DUBLIN, IRISH REPUBLIC
Constructed in the late 1700s, this neo-classical building has played a remarkable role in Irish history. During the 1916 Easter Rebellion against the British, the Custom House was occupied by rebels.
After the 1919-21 Irish War of Independence, it was occupied by Irish Republican Army rebels who rejected the very controversial Free State Treaty that established a limited freedom for most of Ireland. The horrifying, tragic 1922-23 Irish Civil War started when Free State troops bombed the Custom House and forced the rebels to surrender.
Today, it houses an Irish government department and a visitor centre. During our 2025 visit, my wife and I were blessed to experience the Custom House at night, when it’s brilliantly illuminated and reflected in the Liffey River.
