MALIGNE LAKE, JASPER NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA
This is probably one of the most photographed boathouses in Canada and, given the attractive design and colourful finish, that’s not surprising. Especially with such a glorious background. A polarizing filter was an important tool to darken the blue sky and highlight the evening clouds. Nikon D7100, tripod.

SUMMER STREAM, BIG HILL SPRINGS PROVINCIAL PARK, ALBERTA, CANADA
This delightful little park, about a half-hour drive from my home in Calgary, is a wonderland of waterfalls tumbling down a woody hillside. This makes it a perfect place for overcast photos, but only early in the morning. After that the crowds arrive (especially on weekends) and the place becomes a bit of a zoo. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

SETTING SUN ON CHESTERMAN BEACH, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA
My wife and I spent a glorious week on the west coast of Canada’s Vancouver Island, taking in scenes like this. I used a graduated density (darkening) filter to accurately record the sky, which was much brighter than the water. Nikon D7100, tripod.

RED ROCK COULEE, SOUTH OF MEDICINE HAT ALBERTA, CANADA
This is an amazing place. Giant red boulders are scattered everywhere, some mostly whole but many in various states of breakdown. It’s as if God played a game of marbles here a thousand years ago, then left the marbles behind.
What I like about this spot (besides the extraordinary photo opportunities, of course) is there’s pretty much no development — no gift shop and not even a washroom. It’s just you and the breathtaking Alberta prairies. And a whole bunch of amazing boulders.
The sun was very low when I made this photo; I saw my shadow on the boulder and decided to play around with different poses.
Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

FALLSVIEW CASINO, NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO, CANADA
The entrance to this casino is truly, truly spectacular (you can see another example here: http://wp.me/p2ccTX-xK). I spent at least an hour working all the viewpoints and water features and was very glad to have a tripod to make these looooong exposures.

FIREWEED AND BUMBLEBEE, PETER LOUGHEED PROVINCIAL PARK, ALBERTA
Fireweed is always a good photo subject and it’s even better when a bumblebee shows up in the middle of the shoot. I used a flash on this scene to highlight the flower and keep the background darker. This park, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, is named after one of Alberta’s most popular politicians (yes, a politician can leave a positive legacy). Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

RAINFOREST WALK, PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK RESERVE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
This amazing place, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is wet, green and deeply spiritual. I can’t help but praise God for His creation when I’m there. That’s my wife, Lori, serving as a model in the distance.

NEW LIGHT, WRITING ON STONE PROVINCIAL PARK, ALBERTA, CANADA
I arrived at this park about midnight and proceeded to work through most of the night, taking advantage of a strong full moon to make very interesting compositions amongst the extensive badlands flanking the winding Milk River. After snatching perhaps an hour of sleep in the van, I was up again to find fabulous viewpoints like this. Yes, that little circle is the setting moon.

MOUNT SARRAIL & UPPER KANANASKIS LAKE, PETER LOUGHEED PROVINCIAL PARK, ALBERTA
I’m amazed and grateful at how often I’ve visited this glorious spot, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and found the water glassy still. On this morning, it took some time for the water to still but, as you can tell, the wait was oh-so-worth it. Nikon D7100, tripod, graduated density (darkening) filter on the peaks and sky.

FALLSVIEW CASINO, NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO, CANADA
Gotta love these high-end tourist destination casinos. All kinds of money is put into water features and glorious architecture. I spent hours wandering around this casino making long-exposure photos, starting with dusk and going well into the night.

MALIGNE CANYON, JASPER NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA, CANADA
I could spend an entire day exploring this amazing natural attraction in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. At some points, the canyon is 50 metres deep, which means there are lots of glorious waterfalls. You can walk from top to bottom, crossing four or five bridges along the way.
Nikon D90, tripod, polarizing filter (which was crucial to bring out the white water sections).

URBAN ART AT THE BOW, CALGARY, ALBERTA
‘Wonderland’ is the unexpected name of this giant art installation in front of The Bow, one of the newest skyscrapers in Calgary and the third tallest building in Canada (west of Toronto).
You can walk through this three-storey sculpture, designed by Jaume Plensa. And just in case you’re wondering, it is a human face and you’re pretty much looking up the nostrils. Nikon D90, tripod, polarizing filter

SUNSET LIGHT ON TONQUIN PARK BEACH, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA
I love photographing natural abstract patterns. So when I saw how the evening light was catching the pattern made by water flowing through the beach to the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Vancouver Island, I immediately went to work to capture it.
These little scenes are simply amazing, to my eyes. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

APPROACHING SUNSET AT WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA
Just before entering the mountain environment of this park in western Canada, you can tour through gorgeous rolling prairies where buffalo roam. I found this spot to capture evening clouds; wish the water was still, but that’s a rarity in what must be one of the windiest national parks in Canada. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter, possibly a graduated density filter on the sky.

SAND PATTERNS, DEEP RIVER, ONTARIO, CANADA
I wandered along the shores of the Ottawa River (which serves as the border between the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec) during a glorious summer sunrise, finding all sorts of compositions in less than a half-kilometre of beach.
The footprints just add a human element to this artistic mix of gentle waves and a still pool. Nikon D90, tripod, polarizing filter.

ANTIQUE WESTERN WAGON, COCHRANE, ALBERTA
I’ve driven pas
t this wagon (about a half-hour from my home in Calgary) a dozen times, but it always seemed too close to a fence to make a decent photo. I finally stopped and gave it a try recently, blessed with gloriously warm sunrise light.
It was a tricky little project because suburban housing is just a few hundred feet away. This necessitated a lot of close-ups, but thanks to the light and the low perspective (about 18 inches above the ground), I think that restriction was not a problem. Agree? Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

MORNING LIGHT, OTTAWA RIVER, PETAWAWA, ONTARIO
The warm sunrise light provided strong colour, but the wind whipped up the water enough to persuade me to go with a shallow depth of field in order to ‘stop’ the motion of the waves. This river serves as the border between the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. I’ve found great photo opportunities along its shores pretty much year-round.

BIRD HOUSE AND PRAIRIES, SOUTH OF MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA
The day was stinking hot and dry, but the empty prairies were truly epic, especially with the distant thunderheads. The key was making sure the fence and clouds were perfectly aligned. How did I do? Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

MACKENZIE BEACH, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA
