Rural landscapes: follow the fences

FARMLAND SOUTH OF CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA

White fences often make for compelling images, so as soon as I find one, I try to make it work in a photo. In this case, I was blessed with bucolic farmland and rolling hills. The fence shadows really help to make this scene memorable.  Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter, graduated density (darkening) filter on the sky.

Rural landscapes: the splash of light

SUNRISE LIGHT WEST OF COCHRANE, ALBERTA, CANADA

It was the ideal sunrise – light bursting through openings in the clouds. That meant lots of Hollywood-style lighting with a dark, dramatic sky. I’m blessed to live in a place where scenes like this are commonplace. I try never to take it for granted. Nikon D7100, tripod, 70-300 mm. lens, polarizing filter.

BUTCHART GARDENS, NEAR VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA

This 55-acre National Historic Site, on Canada’s west coast, attracts visitors from around the world. It’s truly an incredible place — and this comes from someone who’s not a huge flower fan. It’s easy to spend an entire day checking out all the gardens here. Nikon D90, polarizing filter.

Natural landscapes: a view of sunset

EVENING AT TONQUIN PARK BEACH, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

How would you like to live here, on the glorious west coast of Vancouver Island? Adjectives like “stunning” barely begin to describe the experience — as long as you’re willing to live in a tiny community almost two hours’ drive from decent shopping, a movie theatre, Starbucks or Tim Horton’s. And you better like rain. Lots and lots of rain. 🙂 Not a bad trade-off, eh? Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

SUMMER SKY SOUTH OF LONGVIEW, ALBERTA, CANADA

The road south from Longview is known as the “Cowboy Trail” because of all the true-blue ranching in the region. I love all the vista, rolling hills and epic skies in this area. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter, graduated density (darkening) filter on the sky.

Urban landscapes: reflecting the streetlights

POND AT DUSK, CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA

While driving along Stoney Trail (a ‘ring road’ highway that goes around most of this city), I noticed how the streetlights were reflected in the still pond at one of the highway exits. So I returned to this spot and made several long exposure pictures, always waiting for cars to go past on the road (or the exit) to capture light trails. Kinda different, eh?

Natural landscapes: morning in the mountains

MT. RUNDLE AND TWO JACK LAKE, BANFF NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA

One of the most photographed mountains in the Canadian Rockies still has a starring role in this scene, even though I put it out of focus. Love the light on this morning and after capturing several standard scenes, I went looking for a something different. How did I do?  Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter. MORNING REFLECTIONS, CANMORE, ALBERTA

A pedestrian bridge over this section of Policeman’s Creek is the perfect place to capture glorious reflections of Mt. Rundle. Canmore is a booming town just outside Banff National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Lots of stunning vistas throughout the town. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

Natural landscapes: spring-fed beauty

SUMMER GLORY AT BIG HILL SPRINGS PROVINCIAL PARK, ALBERTA, CANADA

Just a half-hour’s drive from my home in Calgary, this wonderful little park protects a spring that tumbles over about a dozen waterfalls. It’s quite busy on weekend afternoons, so it’s great to show up at or near sunrise, find photographic gems like this, and be gone before the crowds arrive. (Here’s another photogenic Big Hill Springs waterfall: http://wp.me/p2ccTX-rg). Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter.

Natural landscapes: new day’s light

SUNRISE AT CHESTERMAN BEACH, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

This tiny town, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is home to surfers, eco-tour companies and glorious beaches like this. Using a graduated density (darkening) filter on the sky is key to making this photo work; it increases drama and forces your eyes down into the rest of the amazing scene. HUMID MORNING IN MONARCH WOODS, KITCHENER, ONTARIO

While visiting inlaws, I got up early on a misty, humid morning and explored this little forest. Surrounded by suburbia west of Toronto (Canada’s largest city), it’s blessed with a stream and some great vistas. I went for this one, which provides a strong near-far perspective. Nikon D90, tripod.

DEER AND THE LAST REMAINS OF SNOW, SOUTH OF CALGARY, ALBERTA

Besides the deer themselves, what attracted me to this scene is the zig-zag pattern of fencing. Glad to have a telephoto lens to bring the deer close enough for you to really check ’em out. Nikon D90, tripod, polarizing filter.

Rural landscapes: the snows of May

HWY. 66 AFTER THE SNOW, KANANASKIS COUNTRY, ALBERTA

Living at 1,000 metres above sea level means dealing with the occasional May snow dump. This was a glorious morning to make photographs, because the rivers and ponds were ice-free and made for wonderful reflections with snow-laden trees.
To heighten the contrast, I kept the centre lines in colour, but converted the rest of the scene to black & white. Nikon D7100, tripod, polarizing filter, graduated density (darkening) filter on the sky.

Natural landscapes: a swim at dawn

GRICE BAY, PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK, BRITISH COLUMBIA

This park, on the west coast of Canada’s Vancouver Island, is awash in glorious photo opportunities. This is one of the inland bays and a great spot to capture dawn. Especially when a pair of waterfowl glide through the scene. I just waited ’til they reached the most pleasing location in the scene, then made the photo.

This epic old-growth rainforest is a highlight for anyone driving across Vancouver Island on Canada’s west coast. SUNRISE, TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

The west coast of Vancouver Island is one of the most glorious places in Canada. My wife & I recently returned from an amazing week there. On several mornings, I was up before sunrise to look for scenes like this, found in the charming town of Tofino. The setting is incredible! Urban landscapes: waiting for the train

“C-TRAIN” LRT STATION, CALGARY, ALBERTA

The light rapid transit system in this western Canadian city is called the C-Train. I visited one of the newest stations, a three-story-structure with the tracks high above the ground. Initially, I was disappointed the train platform wasn’t better lit, but as you can see, it worked out very well with the circular bulkhead beams and the long exposure on the incoming train.
Who was that dude on the bench? He never lifted his head and skipped several trains.  Nikon D7100, tripod.

Rural landscapes: A waterfall vista

SPRING AT CHAUDIERE FALLS, NEAR QUEBEC CITY, CANADA

I visited Quebec City in May of 2004 and found spring just begining to flourish. A high vista point provide a view of just part of this epic waterfall (the Quebec City region has many outstanding waterfalls) and the budding trees behind it. This was photographed on slide film and, during processing, I had the processor transfer everything to CD. Even then, I knew the future was digital.  🙂
